On November 6th, the day after the election, hundreds of people came to the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine at 7 PM for an Interfaith Vigil for the Healing of the World. We gathered across differences to ease each other’s fears, trust that there is always a path forward together, and proclaim a message of hope and peace.

On September 24 from 7-8pm ET, join the Rev. Shaneequa Brokenleg, Dr. Joy J. Moore, and the Rev. Winnie Varghese, for a conversation about preaching our Christian values in a climate of growing Christian nationalism and white supremacy.

The Rev. Canon Ed Rodman was a civil rights activist, the founder of the Union of Black Episcopalians, an esteemed professor at Episcopal Divinity School, and a driving force for justice in the Church. Join EDS for an online screening of the short documentary about Canon Rodman’s life and ministry followed by a panel conversation.

In 2024, the Church of England celebrates 30 years of women priests and the Episcopal Church USA celebrates 50 years. On September 5 from 1-2pm ET / 6-7pm BST, hear women clergy on both sides of the pond reflect on the roads they’ve traveled and the journey ahead.

On August 29 from 7-8pm ET, join the Rev. Dr. Ruth Meyers, the Rev. Canon Dr. Stephanie Spellers, and the Rev. Lydia Bucklin, for a conversation about using prayer and liturgy to address the current climate of fear and division, and imagine a new future.

On August 6, EDS presented "Claiming Our Values in a Climate of Fear", the first in a four-part online workshop series entitled Being Church: Leading and Caring for our Communities through the 2024 Election.

How do we stay in the fight for a more just future when the arc that bends toward justice is long? How do we maintain hope? On April 13, Join Dr. Kwok Pui Lan and the Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas for a day-long exploration of spirituality for social justice.

As the political influence of Christian nationalist ideology has grown in recent years, so has awareness of the threat it poses to democratic and religious freedoms. On February 3, join Kelly Brown Douglas and Liz Theoharis for a day-long, online seminar on this pressing topic.

In the months of December and January, the Rt. Rev. Matthew Heyd, Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of New York, and the Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas Interim President of EDS, invite their communities to read Jonathan Eig’s highly acclaimed biography of Martin Luther King Jr., King: A Life.

On Friday, December 15th at 10am ET, join Michelle Browder, Lead Artist and Creator of The Mothers Of Gynecology Monument, and the Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas, Interim President of EDS, for a live online conversation.

On December 9, 2023, at 10 am, the Rev. Dr. Carter Heyward, the Rt. Rev. Mary Glasspool, and the Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas joined together at St. John the Divine to mark the 50th anniversary of Dr. Heyward and four other women deacons presenting themselves for ordination to the priesthood.

In this lecture, Dr. Heyward will revisit Audre Lorde’s well-known warning, "The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house," and examine the tools necessary for dismantling the deadly sins of white Christian nationalism that continue to batter the Spirit of Justice-Love in the church.

On October 7, 2023, Episcopal Divinity School hosted James Cone in a Global Context, a day-long online seminar exploring the impact and implications of the Rev. Dr. James Cone’s theology in the UK and across the globe.

Each semester, EDS has selected a theme and corresponding book to prompt conversations about justice issues critical for faith communities.
